IN-HOUSE PHARMACY
We are proud to have a fully stocked pharmacy in East Maryland Animal Hospital. This allows us to quickly fill the medications your pet needs during an exam. This includes medications such as ear therapeutics, eye medications, oral medications, pain medications, antibiotics, de-wormers, anti-nausea, anti-diarrhea, thyroid supplements, holistic supplements, etc. We also provide refills for short-term or long-term medications that your pet may need.
Prescription Refills:
Please allow 48 hours for all prescriptions to be refilled. Pharmacy regulations require that all dispensed prescriptions are approved by a doctor, filled, documented, and double-checked, which can take up to 48 hours depending on our schedule. We will happy to call when a prescription refill is ready to be picked up.
Prescription Returns:
Federal Pharmacy Regulations prohibit the return of any prescription medications with no exceptions.
Policies for Dispensed Medication including Controlled Substances
The Arizona State Board of Pharmacy requires all veterinarians to report the following information from each pet owner that is dispensed controlled prescription medication:
* Name
* Address
* Gender
* Date of Birth
* Telephone Number
Our front office staff will be asking for a form of photo identification to verify this information to keep on file. Please understand that we adhere to strict privacy guidelines and this information will never beshared with anyone other than the Arizona State Board of Pharmacy. Also, controlled substances can only be dispensed to the person(s) whose name and date of birth is on the account. If you would like to update your account information, please call us at 602-279-7366. We cannot dispense controlled substances to anyone under 18 years of age. We appreciate your cooperation and understanding in this matter.
The list of our dispensed medications that we require photo identification for is as follows:

* Hydrocodone (Tussigon)
* Buprenorphine (Buprenex) - for cats
* Fentanyl skin patches

Pharmacy Policies: Annual Exams, Refills, & Bloodwork
Annual exams are required for all prescriptions to be filled and refilled; this includes prescription diets. Not only is this simply practicing good medicine, but is also a state pharmaceutical regulation we are required to follow.
Certain medications require blood work to be done every six months. This is for the safety of your pet, as the blood work can screen for any issues with internal organs. This helps to check for any internal side effects of the medicine and help to adjust dosages if needed. Please schedule your blood work and refills accordingly. Usually, blood work can be scheduled as a 15 minute appointment with a Technician, and the doctor will call you to review the results.
Examples of medicine requiring twice yearly blood work:
* Prednisone, or repeated Depo Medrol injection
* Rimadyl
* Deramaxx
* Metacam
* Furosimide (Salix, Lasix)
* Insulin
* Trilostane
* Phenobarbital
* Potassium Bromide
* Thyrozine - once yearly bloodwork
Your pet's doctor will help advise you on what specific test is recommended for your pet's individual needs and discuss the frequency that it needs to be checked. Please do not hesitate to call and ask us any questions regarding blood work for prescription medication use.
