How does a microchip help return your pet if stolen or lost?

All animal shelters and most animal hospitals will routinely scan lost pets for microchips. If the pet does not have one and the collar/tags were removed, OR if the microchip was not registered with the owner's current information - then unfortunately the pet is sent to the pound or animal control center.
